Different People Surround Me

In the middle of a new environment. Different people surrounded me.

Went to class the other day. My
gold-plated necklace relaxed with pride against
the silk brown of my collarbone. Back straight,
face soft and untouched.

A moment inside and I
de-evolved, crawled into my skin so

far beneath that I was unseen.
But I heard it sound
and it poked me- stiff, fire-headed needle
begging for my eyes once again- my window,
so that I would freeze, would be the center of the
ha that named me no good.

I went back to class yesterday.
my diamond earrings stood up
against my cardboard box complexion,
smoke still rising from
the roots of my hair.

The moment I entered, I found myself
hunched over backwards, struck
by the same needle. Dug deep into the folding
of each leg. My face remained up,
atop every clinched part of me. I was unsure.
